COOPER

Friday, September 9, 2072

3:32 A.M.

Cooper jerked awake at the now familiar clang of the door by the gate banging shut. He reoriented in the dark, the light from his campfire now nothing but coals.

He lifted himself from the cot, the door to the yurt open. Kiva lay just below his cot. A small light bobbed and weaved its way towards him. Mia wasn’t supposed to come until later in the morning. He loosened the pistol in his gun-belt and stood in the shadows to wait for the next visitor.

The dog growled low in her throat.

Two men materialized on the other side of the stone ring and he stilled as he recognized both of them; one tall with salt and pepper hair, the other shorter with black hair in wild disarray.

“Mr. Cooper?” Daniel Burgess said in a cool calm monotone.

At the sound of the man’s voice, the past came crashing in around Cooper like debris following the destruction of a tornado.
